The Latest Trs Reshaping the Mobile Gaming Landscape

Mobile gaming’s growth story is becoming more nuanced today, influenced by diverse factors such as Apple's Transparency and Consent Framework ATT, which impact user acquisition costs; economic downturns affecting marketing budgets; and the ongoing macroeconomic recovery since COVID-19. This has led to varying impacts on game genres like Hypercasual, Shooter, and RPGs based on our State of Mobile Gaming report. But amidst these challenges, new patterns and businesslike Hybridcasual games and External Game Subscriptions like Netflix are gning traction. Let's dive into why this is happening.

Mixed Bag

The top five genres by downloads in 2022 remned consistent with previous years, but each genre showed its unique picture:

Hypercasual, once the leader, experienced a downturn of about 10 overall and a steep decrease of nearly 24 in Q4 2022. Yet, it continued to witness a decline in 2023.

Simulations saw growth as Puzzle slipped, with Roblox playing a pivotal role along with the emergence of Simulators, Sandbox games, and TycoonCrafting titles that leverage the Hybridcasual engaging gameplay experiences.

While most genres registered negative growth in downloads, Action games grew by an impressive 13 due to the popularity of Shoot’em Up games such as Survivor.io and Sandbox Action games like School Party Craft, which borrow from Roblox's legacy.

Hybridcasual - a Winning Formula?

The Hybridcasual product model combines elements that make it a promising strategy:

Simple core mechanics that require minimal cognitive effort, akin to Hypercasual games.

Progression features inspired by Mid-Core genres but simplified for better user retention.

A monetization bl of Casual-style currency bundles and progression packs alongside interstitials and rewarded ads, similar to hypercasual practices.

Often lower development costs compared to casual titles due to the utilization of common assets, codebases, and logic from existing projects in a Hypercasual approach.

Appealing to a broad audience due to its unique fusion of Mid-Core, Hypercasual, and Casual elements.
